Undershrubs, shrubs or small trees, branchlets usually 4-angled when young. Leaves opposite or whorled, simple, entire, toothed or lobed, petiolate, exstipulate. Flowers in axillary cymes, cymes di- or trichotomous, corymbose, umbellate or panicles. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, hypogynous, usually large, showy, white, yellowish, blue, violet or red; bracts small or conspicuous. Calyx campanulate, rarely tubular, truncate, 5-toothed or 5-partite, persistent, often accrescent and coloured. Corolla tube narrowly cylindric, straight or curved, often very long; limb more or less oblique with 5 spreading lobes. Stamens 4, didynamous, much exserted; anthers bithecous, ovate or oblong, the thecae parallel. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary incompletely 4-locular, ovules 1 per loculus attached near the top of loculus; style long, filiform; stigma shortly 2-fid. Fruit usually 4-furrowed or 4-lobed, exocarp more or less succulent, endocarp crustaceous or bony, dividing into 4 one-seeded or 2 two- seeded stones.

A shrub or small tree, bark ashy-grey, thin,smooth; twigs tomentose. Leaves opposite, 3-10.5 cm x 2-3.5 cm, ovate or rhomboid-ovate, acute or obtuse, base truncate or obtuse, entire, undulate orcoarsely crenate-dentate, more or less puberulous on both surfaces, dull-green; lateral nerves 3-5 pairs, the lowest pair sub-basal; petiole 1-3 cm long, densely pubescent, dorsal shallow groove. Flowers 1.5 cm across, creamy-white, fragrant, in small axillary dichotomous cymes forming arounded terminal panicle; pedicels 5-10 mm long, pubescent; peduncle 1.5-1.8 cm long; bracts 6 mm x 3 mm, lanceolate or obovate or ovate-lanceolate, foliaceous. Calyx campanulate, yellowish-green, 1 cm long, divided about halfway down, glabrous or puberulous, lobes 5, ovate-acuminate or ovate-triangular, slightly enlarged in fruit. Corolla tube ca. 2.2 cm long, slightly pubescent outside; lobes 5, subequal, 7-8 mm x ca. 5 mm, oblong or ovate-elliptic, obtuse. Stamens 4, inserted in upper half of corolla tube, exserted; filaments 2-2.5 cm long; anthers about 2 mm long, oblong, thecae parallel, dehiscence longitudinal.
Fruits drupe, 8-12 mm x 6 mm, broadly obovoid, usually 4-lobed, enclosed by persistent calyx, black when ripe. (Fruits not observed)
